reliving many pleasurable moments along the way it does not al ways turn out to be the wis est thing to re-visit places that we have known in past years for often it seems that some of the glamour attached to places and things has faded and we are often disappointed but all seemed the same and any changes were for the bet ter so after another pleasant journey it was back to ber muda where the years passed by slowly and fairly unevent fully continuing he said there is a direct link between the casuality of drug usage and the methods we use to try and effect some attitudinal changes in the young people this programme was not gov ernment funded but set up by interested members of the community and entirely fund keen desire to do something ed by private citizens with a about young people for they realized that young people are our society's future it was through this wcrk with the drug programme in canada that mr richards be came inspired to return to his home after an absence of 12 years he says after work ing with this programme for 3 years and becoming familiar with the successes and fail ures of this particular society with its severe problems and little back-up support on the preventative end — it became more important to me that my home bermuda should not remain isolated from this in fluence i felt that most of the casuality that existed there ex isted here but being a small island we could prevent many of the causes while in bermuda he be came aware of government's effort to evolve a drug pro gramme and he later became continued on page 3 quite frankly leaving the warmth and sunshine of ber muda i was very apprehensive of how i could live in england a cold damp foggy sunless land or such is the impres sion i had gathered from mostly english people i am always glad when people draw a dismal verbal picture of somewhere something or someone for you which seems the worst imaginable because as it happened i found it to be so much nicer than i expected in every respect mr joseph j richards is education and prevention coordinator for the group bermuda's drug prever tion program a resident of somerset mr richards was locally berke-h the statesh the ofh growth however i must relate how we got there as we had t large quantity of luggage of course the only way i could travel was by boat it was a good opportunity to spend a few weeks in new york before coing on to england luckily it was a very mild december the weather being like spring for the entire time and it was a very pleasant time i had seen most of the interesting places before so that the.e were more social events than sightseeing ones ing worked with a drug pro gramme in canada for the past three years he was nat urally quite interested in the local drug situation and what was being done to combat it mr joseph richards the corporate scene and having grown up with the youth movement in north america from 1961 to the present i was well in tune with struggle of the youth and the different approaches hey had used to voice their dis satisfaction with the existing life styles i then decided to get involved with youth — and particularly with the drug cul ture as i became keenly aware of some of the casuality of drug abuse within the system and knew it was not as simple mr charles stewart mott — once rated as one of 13 richest men in america director of general motors and a renown philanthropist was a familiar figure here in ber muda where he maintained a vacation home parapet at scaur hill somerset until his death on february 18th y.m.c.a he arranged for someone from his community education programme in flint michigan to come to bermuda for one year to found the y he also gave a do nation to st james church which enabled them tc build their church hall an active rotarian mr mott never z.f.b radio and television are to be honoured by st paul a.m.e church at their 11 a.m service on sunday the presentation of awards will take place at a dinner to be held at the grotto bay hotel on saturday april 21 1973 and the guest speaker fo the evening will be one of the party's founding members mr edward dejean in canada mr richards had been a part of a drug treatment programme calied barbour house ". speaking of how he became involved in this programme that changed his career so drastically m richards noted after work ing for 4v2 to 5 years in my field for a trust company in canada i had had my fill of each year st paul's h mother church of african methodism in bermuda pre sents to an outstanding per son or organization the high est honour given by the a.m.e church — the richard allen plaque mr mott who died in hos pital after suffering from in missed a local meeting when he was in the island fluenza was 97 at the time of his death surviving him are his wife ruth rawlings mott four daughters mrs eisa molt iv«j5 who with ier husband kenneth is a mem ber of the american friends of bermuda foundation inc mrs susan elizabeth mott mr mott's name stands in the front ranks of the men who made the motor car pos sible his name will also be remembered fj>r his philan thropic works through his mott foundation — his most famous legacy to his heme town of flint michigan mr dejean a former head master of the howard acad emy will be coming to ber muda irom canada to be pres ent at the party's 10th anni versary awards dinner this year z.f.b has been selected hy the pastor and founder's day committee of st paul to receive the plaque in recognition of outstanding community service in present ing news and programmes through the media of radio and forming the this philosophy out wherever he went including bermuda the criteria for selection in cluded the quality of exist ing educational programmes current and prospective enrol ment the strength of admin istrative leadership including the president trustees and deans responsiveness to the needs of black students evi dence of ideas for use of funds beyond business as usual and the capacity for attracting resources in addition to ford foundation money tokenism or triumph black board members newly opened city coin gal lery the following article entitled black board members tokenism or triumph is reprinted with the permis sion off the d parke gibson associates inc i.mrs htant stores general foods man ufacturers hanover trust and union carbide mrs oda burgess fcunc that during her time at the coin company collectors would come in and talk free ly about coins they were al ways willing to give her ad vice and tell her the dos and don'ts of coin dealing after three and a half years with this company it was sold and mrs burgess and the new owner worked together for a year and a half before she left to go home and rest dr rembert stokes stated that the 3 million dclar award which is payable over a period of five years is the direct result of a programme initiated by the wilberforce development office staff and is the culmination of efforts by many friends alumni trus tees faculty and administra tors another appointment receiv ing applause was the naming of thomas b shropshire to the board of the miller brewnig company in milwaukee mr shropshire now serving as vice president and marketing head moved over to milwau kee after a successful assign philip morris nigerian sub black women also serve black women with a double minority status have not been completely ignored although tradition has been yieldmg grudgingly among the hand ful ot black women serving major boards of directors mrs patricia harris is a member of four — chase man hattan ibm national bank of washington which also elected majorie m lawson and scott paper co jewel companies and trans world airlines have distaffed their boards with noted attorney the john hancock life ins co has a black female direc tor in mrs mary ella robert son in a most significant re cent move mrs whitney m young educator and author and wido wof the late execu tive director of the national urban leaegue was named to the board of philip morris inc the ford foundation indi cated that the level of future support over the five-year period will be determined by several performance criteria including increased enrolment faculty improvement the quality of future planning and the ability to develop ether sources of income ment as managing director of sidiary which produces al most 20 per cent of the cigar recently celebrated their third anniversary with a special service at the wesley methodist chursh long bay somerset they held their third anniversary dinner on the same night march 2nd at ganize branches of the key women wherever she may travel the key was presented to her because of the splen did work she has done in or ganizing the key women ot bermuda in the short span of three years by jennifer smith mr joseph ferreira zone chairman for this year's tag day announced that the can vass of the island is divided into three districts the east ern district which includes devonshire hamilton district which covers the city of ham ilton and the central parishes and sandys district which em braces warwick through sandys * * * five years ago when she answered an ad ad for a managress of a small establishment val williams starts final year at toledo young poets to be presented at fourth annual poetry festival astwood hall in hamilton guest soloist for the occa a book-keeper by trade mrs burgess has also had some experience in selling so she decided to combine these two assets and apply for the manageress job she had in interview with two of tt'e directors of the companv and two weeks later receiv ed a phone call telling her the job was hers she began work on a trial basis but before long she was hired perma nently and thus began mrs burgess's relationship with coins a relationship that has grown into a true love for the items she handles an editorial in the black oriented philadelphia tribune commented on dr holland's appointment a change is being made in the ger.eral structure of the exchange with former customers becom ing members on a large scale and it is believed that dr holland's experience will be of great value in channeling the changes which will club the somerset cricket club ladies auxiliary the ladies brigade band and the em manuel baptist prayer band young poets ages 5 to 24 will have the opportunity to shine in the 4th annual inter national poetry verse fesci val sponsored by the world poets resource center inc and its affiliate — the east ern centre of the poetry soci ety of england on saturday may 12th 1973 at the ken nedy center on e 135th st in harlem the festival a great cultural event has grown steadily since its begin ning in 1970 fifty young poets were presented at the down town community school in 1971 and 122 young poets n 1972 at the kennedy center the 1973 festival is being held from 9:30 a.m until 5 p.m with the program being divid ed as to age groups with miss marion darrell in charge as the general chairman miss darrell who is assistant prin cipal at the malcolm x school p.s 79 in harlem has been festival chairman for two years and she reports to date that entries for the festival are coming in fast . . . and the number might even surpass the 122 young poets who were presented last year-1972 toledo ohio — val wil liams a senior letterman from southampton bermuda will be a member of the 1973 track team under new head coach john flaminio val will act as captain of the squad for the second straight year the chairman stated that last year's effort on behalf of the blind of bermuda netted 2,644.00 which was turned over to the bermuda society for toe blind williams is one of toledo's top sprinters but missed the mid - american conference championships last year with a pulled muscle suffered just one week prior to the meet as a sophomore val was sec other corps integrated dr holland has also inte grated the boards of ameri can telephone & telegraph chrysler corp continental corp federated department during the dinner president of the local key women mrs helen maynard was honoured with a silver double duty key as an international president enabling her to or following the recently celebrated their third anniversary with a special service at the wesley methodist chursh long bay somerset they held their third anniversary dinner on the same night march 2nd at ganize branches of the key women wherever she may travel the key was presented to her because of the splen did work she has done in or ganizing the key women ot bermuda in the short span of three years by jennifer smith mr joseph ferreira zone chairman for this year's tag day announced that the can vass of the island is divided into three districts the east ern district which includes devonshire hamilton district which covers the city of ham ilton and the central parishes and sandys district which em braces warwick through sandys * * * five years ago when she answered an ad ad for a managress of a small establishment val williams starts final year at toledo young poets to be presented at fourth annual poetry festival astwood hall in hamilton guest soloist for the occa a book-keeper by trade mrs burgess has also had some experience in selling so she decided to combine these two assets and apply for the manageress job she had in interview with two of tt'e directors of the companv and two weeks later receiv ed a phone call telling her the job was hers she began work on a trial basis but before long she was hired perma nently and thus began mrs burgess's relationship with coins a young poets n 1972 at the kennedy center the 1973 festival is being held from 9:30 a.m until 5 p.m with the program being divid ed as to age groups with miss marion darrell in charge as the general chairman miss darrell who is assistant prin cipal at the malcolm x school p.s 79 in harlem has been festival chairman for two years and she reports to date that entries for the festival are coming in
