fourth in a series mr freddie thomas customs tariff aired before druq abuse - some questions and answers thomas said i feel all men sions include physical fitness the art of self-defense and box ing boston massachusetts — the berklee cqlleje of music has accepted ross d simons son of mr and mrs c k simons sr of hamilton as a freshman in its mid-year class which commenced on january 29th pass on my experience speaking of his reasons for opening the school mr what is a drug government a drug is a substance which by its chemical nature has an effect upon the mind and body maany substances not usually thought of as beliefs about drugs just as no present for vears the nasmn two people are the same no that man has used jnjgc dlllgs are included in throughout history are mainly this definition such as the same reasons for today caffeine alcohol nico nonmedical drug use to tine pollutants and ease pain to stop anxiety to i im i'i change experience and thous i household chemicals many of the reasons that ynunl - these are considered people use drugs are for fun drugs because they ef to make social communication feet the function of the easier - t0 feel better - to relieve wanderlust this is a fantastic feat for a person and i feel i have all the contact with people that could send all the good boxers here throughout europe or the u.s i quit boxing but i'm willing to train someone else and pass on my experience looking towards olympics the chairman of the manu facturing section of the ber muda chamber of commerce reports that the manufacturing section has made several de tailed presentations to govern ment in the past concerning the intended promised support to local manufacturers in vari ous forms including a possible readjustment of customs tariffs as applicable to raw materials packaging products and ma chinery and equipment used by those industries this re sulted in a meeting recently between representatives of most industries in the manu facturing section of the cham ber with the hin r m gor ham and mr ken hardfng collector of customs during which the whole question was thoroughly aired the talented flutist ross is an alumnus of berklee's exten mr jim ollis he has been a i think thai bermuda has a wealth of material for writers both of fiction end non-fiction and i hope that one day i will write the romantic story about ber muda that i have always to go to st vincent as net wished to do my love for guest and so it was that i my island home has never got my first look at the west diminished nor ever will indian islands ilt 4 "''■m_\___\__m____\_____l dol bt ■' the school presently has 5 boys training they can be seen at the amateur athletic boxing competition on febru ary 3rd but mr thomas is looking to increase his enroll ment to 40 boys but if one has itching feet the great outside has an irresistible call at that time the neat little lady boats were running from canada via bermuda to the by chance i began a cor respondence with a girl irom st vincent this happened be cause in a different time and place we had both thought we were in love with the same man luckily for me i real caribbean and as far as brit ish guiana now guyana winch i visited at a later time so the day came when i boarded the lady drake and was off ta st vincent the voyage itself was very i nteresting as v e stopped at most of the islands along the way i was fortunate to have contacts in mos of the islands and so found each and every one that we visited unique in its own way i was overwhelmed with hospitality and my fellow passengers were a jolly lot so of course every moment was a delightful ex perience shipboard romances bloomed and faded and no ooe took them seriously st ritts st lucia and dominica the last two with their beautiful green hills and waterfalls the open air markets with the ven dors crying out in french patois which i later came to understand crying out to at tract one's attention to then wares such as straw bags baskets hats in many varie gated colours delicious man goes and tropical fruits which i did not at that time know of pigeon peas which i grew to love when we arrived at barba dos which is a coral island the only one among the group ap peared quite flat after the somewhat mountainous terrain we had seen in the other islands but its beaches were lovely with the overhanging luscious green coconut palms these were a great attraction continued on page 12 living organism how ever in this article we will deal with those boredom and frustration to escape from problems and per haps to protest one question put by the asso ciation seemed a rather hoare one this was what would hap pen to gogo tours if joseph garzilli were to die tomorrow he replied that leadership was continuously being develop ed within the organization and that a successor was almost certainly already employed by the company the company feels that with little knowledge of bermuda's needs they would think it reasonable to say they could produce some two to three million dollars or abou the level of their production to islands like the virgin islands continued on page 2 he adds i'm now looking forward to the olympics in montreal canada in the next 4 years i think bermuda has the possibility of putting in a few boxers it is his aim to get some of bermuda's young boxers ready to partici pate he will be turning all of his experience towards this end and concentrating on youths between the age of 15 and 22 drugs commonly refer what is the problem red to as drugs of the drug problem is com plex there are few issues which arouse so many emotions as the abuse of drugs in one respect the problem is that we are a drug-oriented society and people are using more drugs without understanding their nc tions mr ross simons abuse including mari juana hallucinogens narcotics ampheta sive summer program whic>i he attended in 1971 at that time the young musician studied under the noted performer composer nicholas caiazza former member of the woody herman tommy dorsey and benny goodman orches'.ra and a veteran berklee educa tor a graduate of the berkeley institute in pembroke ross continued on page z by elaine ellingham mines and barbitu ized that he was not sincere and soon got over it unfor tunately for her it took some while longer i do not even re member how it came about that we began to correspond all i know is that it culminated in an interesting adventure — mr gorham indicated the matter was currently under review by government and he made an undertaking to the chamber that they would be in a position to develop further discussions by the first of april this year in the hope of resolving some of the current problems voiced by the cham rates why is drug abuse prevalent today tlie misuse of drugs is not a new phenomenon different the problem is also one of people and their feelings and mr thomas is also looking forward to putting on a box ing show in between the pro motions of the amateur ath letic boxing shows he says i have a strong feeling that with the right promotion ama teur boxing could return to the bermuda scene types of drilg abuse have been continued on page 6 one
